Information and Resources About E-Cigarettes and Vaping

Dear Families,

The use of vaping devices has been on the rise in public schools across the nation. The United States Surgeon General, Dr. Jerome Adams, has classified vaping as an epidemic, qualifying it as a new public health concern. We take this very seriously as it impacts the health and wellbeing of our students and continue to tackle this challenge at school through several means.

We have increased supervision around restrooms and other areas around campuses and students who are found vaping are addressed through comprehensive intervention and discipline processes. In addition, all CVUSD secondary sites have Tobacco-Use Prevention and Education (TUPE) Coordinators who are trained through the Alameda County Office of Education to help lead initiatives at sites, curriculum in classrooms, and to recruit and develop Peer Educators.  Our TUPE Peer Educators lead school-wide tobacco awareness presentations, individual classroom presentations, and other peer education activities.

As we partner with you to support our students, we  hope you find the following information we have gathered helpful while you work with your children to make good decisions about their health and prevent them from vaping. We will continue to update information related to this topic on our website.

Nicotine/tobacco, in any form, is not permissible on school grounds. When students vape in school bathrooms it can be due to an addiction to nicotine they have developed, peer pressure or they are simply curious and want to try it out. In any case, spending excessive time out of class is heavily correlated to lower academic performance. Additionally, vaping on school grounds negatively impacts students and staff who do not want to be exposed to or breathe in vapor.

Our goal is to partner with parents to help support students in making positive decisions for themselves and their future. We encourage you to have a conversation with your student(s) about this topic.

Additional info about vaping and e-cigarettes can be found here on the district website.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
